Eat (kawaii), Sleep (kawaii), Sketch (kawaii)

Hi it's Edith again.

Before we get started I'd like to say three, wait. no. FOUR things.

Number 1: Merry Christmas! Sorry it's a bit late! Hope you got everything you asked for, and had a good time with your family.

Number 2: This DEFINITELY isn't a copy of the previous post Mariam did. There is DEFINITELY a difference between Sketching and Doodling. For a start, you can runaway and get lost in your doodles (now I come to think about it, you can do the same thing with sketching too, but we're not gonna talk about that) Bad Example. Let's try again. Sketching is the start of a drawing that will be developed, coloured in, outlined, stuff like that. I would do them in pencil, but if I were to do a sketch of a sketch (confusing), I might use anything. Doodling, on the other hand is when you fill a piece of paper with symbols, characters, mini pictures, or anything else quick and small and most importantly, cute and pretty.

Number 3: This one's about the title. I don't know if it was exactly clear. The idea is that you're sleeping kawaii, eating kawaii and sketching kawaii. I really need to up my game in titles.

Number 4: Happy New Year! This is my first post in 2022 I realise, so I guess that's pretty special! Also, the anniversary of this blog is coming up, I'd like to hear your suggestions on how we can celebrate that by adding something new to the blog. I'll post the date on when I find out exactly when it was (may have to change to weekend dates because of school).

So, let's get started.

You don't need to have certain things to develop great kawaii sketches, that ultimately will be turned into characters that you use in your drawing everyday (I'd really like to see some of your sketches, post them in the comments or share them privately through me or Mariam on the Happy Blog). I have an Apple Pencil and an iPad that I use (if you have these things I recommend ProCreate, which is affordable and easygoing if you are a beginner), but don't feel like you have to have all the fancy tech, a pencil, sketchbook and some colours is fine too, especially if you're not sure illustration is your thing. Just try it out and if you love it and your parents agree, then you can talk about getting some good equipment. I am currently a student on the Ilariapops Kawaii Illustration course on Domestika and I'm finding it really great. You should definitely try it out because someone can gift you the course (I got it for Christmas from my parents), and it's sorta affordable (I honestly don't know what would be a good price for an online course) but yeah, I think it's great👍.

There are lots of different methods for body proportions, here's my favourite:

  1. Draw a square

  2. Dot a line down the middle. It can leave the sections as 50% - 50%, 60% - 40% or 70% - 30%. You can also skip this step and leave as 100%. Note: always have the bigger section on the top, it will become the character's head.

  3. Draw a kind of circle in the top section. If you left as 100%, draw a big blob in the square.

  4. Begin on drawing the body, look below to see different poses to copy.

5. Add the face and colour.

Done! Hope you enjoyed this post!

Edith
